saw this aria from Donizetti's Roberto Devereaux on the arts channel last night and found it on YouTube this morning. The soprano is Edita Gruberova. She's playing Elizabeth I and singing about how her time is past and the grave yawns before her, and finally it's time to give up her crown. Watch this all the way through -- turn it UP -- and tell me if this is not one of the most startling performances you've ever seen. I wept from shock and joy.
